The IGP’s Ides of March — The Malaysian Insider
MARCH 15 — Beware the Ides of March, William Shakespeare warned in his Julius Caesar play which highlighted treachery at the top.
Tan Sri Musa Hassan must have recalled that play when Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein effectively made him a lame duck Inspector-General of Police today when confirming the police chief’s tenure comes to an end this year.
“I already know who is going to replace the IGP. I already know who is going to replace the director of the commercial crime division. I already know those who will take over, so there is no need for us to speculate and report news without basis,” said Hishammuddin in Parliament today when commenting on speculation raised by the China Press over the weekend.
In not so many words, the Home Minister has told the police force that they don’t have to listen to the IGP anymore as he waits for his last contract come to an end.
Hishammuddin’s statement also lends credence to the speculation that he has had an uneasy relationship with the IGP who is now spending a second year on contract.
After all, the IGP had come out to say that there should not be any protests after the High Court’s New Year's Eve ruling that Catholic weekly Herald has a constitutional right to use “Allah” to describe the Christian God.
State news agency Bernama quoted Hishammuddin on Jan 6 as saying the government does not prohibit the people from expressing their views on the issue over the use of the word “Allah” by the Catholic weekly magazine Herald, but on condition that their actions do not undermine national security.
“I will take action if it affects security,” Bernama quoted him as telling reporters when asked about protests in mosques over the matter.
But the IGP did not tolerate that and ensured protests were kept within the mosques on the same day the Metro Tabernacle Church in Desa Melawati was torched.
It goes without saying that when two men don’t see eye-to-eye on issues, one of them will lose out in the end.
For Musa, the Ides of March is the day he found out that the government has no further use for him in the police force although Hishammuddin clarified that the reshuffling process did not involve the IGP alone, but also other top-ranking officials within the police force.
“In this matter it does not only involve the IGP alone but four other directors out of the seven divisions of PDRM [who] will retire this year. In fact one of the directors is already on leave, three or six months prior to leaving the service.”
“So the transition is happening and this is an opportunity for us to look at a new chapter in the history of the police,” Hishammuddin said.
A new chapter for the police force, and a new chapter for Musa. His time is up, six months before he actually calls it a day as the country’s top cop and takes the last ride out of Bukit Aman.
He might as well leave now. Hishammuddin has already closed this chapter of Musa’s life without as much as a thank you for services rendered..
